Texture Is My Friend

Hello all!

Creating paint sketches is probably the thing I learn from the most. It eliminates (or greatly cuts back) my desire to capture something “perfectly” or overthink in general. Painting and drawing both call for a ton of thought process- but sometimes too much thinking can backfire. So, studies like these help to get in flow. :)

In this study, I combined both drawing and painting. Softer graphite moves and flows easily on oil paint and I like the linear effect it gives to a piece.

Texture can be found and created so many ways in a painting. The first five years or so of painting I loved texture and used it excessively. (Rip paintings circa 2010). 😂

But…..

The more I paint and experiment, I realize that it’s not the AMOUNT of texture used, but rather the WAY it is used, applied, and related to the other types of texture in the piece. In other words, you have to make it work in your favor.

So, I’ve made my peace with texture. It is my friend.

Have a colorful day,

xxCass
